"Little Friends" / "Mali Przyjaciele"

Piotr Gorka 1993; Oil on canvas 43 x 32 in

Autumn 1943 over the Durch coast - two Spitfire Mk. IXc fighters of No. 302 (Polish) Squadron accompanying a flak-damaged USAAF B-17 "Flying Fortress", returning home after a daylight raid on the Third Reich. 302 Squadron was formed at RAF Leconfield on 13th July 1940.

Available in Ltd. ed. of 550 prints signed by pilots and artist [250 Euro]

Ltd editions are printed on 300 gram ISO 9706 guaranteed paper with UV protection coating. The reproduction print format is of 75 x 51 cm size of the painting plus a passe-partout of 6 cm, yielding total dimensions of 90 x 66 cm.

Each print is hand numbered and signed by the artist and includes signatures of pilots Stanislaw Skalski, Tadeusz Sawicz, Ignacy Olszewski, Jerzy Szymankiewicz and Edward Jaworski.

 

 

This painting was of great personal interest to the Late Brigadier General Stanislaw Skalski who commented:

"The painting entitled "Little Friends" (That is what we the fighters, were called by the bomber crews, is one of my favourites. It brings back memories from the time when, every day we had been on flying missions, backing up the bombing expeditions, and often on the way back we were taking care of the damaged B-17s. We had always tried, at any cost, to bring them safely back to the shores of England."
