"North Ashey Down"

Piotr Gorka 1995; Oil on canvas 43 x 30 in

Spitfire Mk.I of No. 609 Squadron, flown by F/O Piotr Ostaszewski, who - assisted by P/O Jan Zurakowski (Who became the first test-pilot of the Canadian CF-105 Avro Arrow) of No. 234 Squadron - shot down a Messerschmitt 110C twin-engined fighter of 6/ZG76 (coded M8+BP) at 6:06 pm on 15th August 1940 near the Isle of Wight. During the Battle of Britain eight Polish pilots fought within these two RAF units.
