Practical travel information in Krakow

While much of your time in Krakow (Cracow) will surely be spent strolling and walking about (remember to bring comfortable walking shoes!), as in any larger city you will most likely take advantage of municipal transit buses and trams (a new Bombardier municipal tram is pictured at right) as well as taxis to get around. Below is important information on the municipal transit sytem and on taxi service in Krakow, as well as numbers for car and even bicycle rentals. The municipal transit system is excellent in Krakow; any part of the city can be reached by bus or tram with short wait times and very punctual service.

MUNICIPAL TRANSIT IN KRAKOW:

The regular buses and trams in Krakow run from approximately 5.00 a.m. until 11.00 p.m. From 11.00 pm to 5.00 there are night buses. Schedules of all trams and buses may be found at each transit stop. The timing is quite reliable.

A normal one-way ticket costs 2.50 zl. No changing the bus or tram! You can buy it in a newspaper kiosk where there is written: sprzedaz biletów MPK . If you buy the ticket from the tram driver, you have to pay an additional 0.50 zl. Note that ISIC card or other foreign student cards are not valid for getting reduction tickets. You need to stamp the ticket immediately after boarding the bus or tram. Rucksacks, boxes and bags larger than 20x40x60 cm also require a 2.50 zl ticket. There are no one-week tickets any more. It is advisable to buy a month-ticket. It's valid from the date you are buying it up to 30 days.

TAXIS in KRAKOW:

Unlike some European cities where taxis are notorious for taking advantage of tourists (eg. Prague where marked taxis regularly overcharge tourists up to 500% of normal fare or where fares must be negotiated), the marked taxis in Krakow are well regulated, honest, affordable and reliable.

But beware of unmarked private taxis near the railway station and certain hotels, which are unreliable and overcharge. The private taxis are in the minority in Krakow and it is easy to distinguish between them and the reliable radio dispatched ones: Marked radio taxis have signs on the roof and markings on the side with the telephone number and the name of the company clearly visible. Many of the companies have a toll free phone number. Some of the most reliable Krakow taxis are listed below:

Barbakan Taxi tel.: 9661, toll free tel.: 0 800 400 400
Euro Taxi tel.: 9664
Express Taxi tel.: 9629
Mega Taxi tel.: 9625, toll free tel.: 0 800 200 200
Metro Taxi tel.: 9667
Radio Taxi tel.: 9688

IMPORTANT: HOW TO ORDER TAXI SERVICE IN KRAKOW:

The procedure of ordering a taxi in Krakow is different than in many other Polish cities and is as follows:

  1. Call the taxi radio dispatch (most dispatchers speak English and if not ask for an English operator)
  2. Tell the dispatch your location and name (it is important to give your name as this will be confirmed by the driver).
  3. After waiting a few moments the dispatch will tell you the colour and type of vehicle and the time of arrival (eg. “there will be a blue Mercedes at your location in 4 minutes”)
  4. When you see your taxi (it will be of the colour and type described and will have the phone number and name of the taxi company clearly marked) enter and give your name for confirmation)
  5. Away you go! If you called the taxi by phone then, at your destination, with any fare above 10 Zlotych, you will receive a disounted fare (approx 20%). The driver will either consult a special chart or, as is increasingly the case with newer cabs, have the discounted fare automatically calculated by the meter. By phoning for a cab, you will always pay less than if you hail the same taxi from the street, regardless of time of day or tariff.

IMPORTANT: VARIABLE TAXI TARIFF IN KRAKOW:

There are 4 taxi tariffs programmed into the taxi meters of all taxis in Krakow and you will pay a different tariff based on location and time of day. The tariff number will be on the meter above the charge and will indicate either numbers 1, 2, 3 or 4. The higher the tariff number the higher will be the charge per kilometer. The system is quite straightforward and is explained below:

Tariffs 1 and 2 are for travel within the city limits of Krakow itself: Tariff 1 is the least expensive and pertains to travel from Monday through to Saturday during the period from 6:00 in the morning till 22:00 in the evening. Tariff 2 is slightly higher and would be charged. From 22:00 till 6:00 in the morning as well as all day Sunday and on holidays.

Tariffs 3 and 4 are employed in exactly the same manner, except that they are charged when you are outside the city limits of Krakow. Thus, Tariffs 3 and 4 outside of the city are similar to Tariffs 1 and 2, respectively, within the city limits. For example, if you are arriving by airplane to Krakow via Balice International Airport and you were to take a taxi during the day from Monday to Saturday, the initial tariff on the meter would be 3 as the airport is outside of the city limits proper, and the driver would switch the tariff to 1 upon crossing the border of the city. If you arrived on a Sunday, the initial tariff would be 4 and would be switched to 2 upon entering the city limits. [TOP]
